One of the stylistic effects which keeps the audience engaged in a film that from the outside looks as if it has too much going on is their ability to blend their dry and outrageous comedic performances with the dark images of film noir. This is what sets them apart. This is very effective in their film Fargo staring Francis McDorman, The Big Lebowski, and Barton Fink. While watching Fargo, one scene you will find yourself laughing wildly, yet the next scene you will witness a man being put through a wood chipper. Yet the Coen brothers, in fact, make this transition tastefully.
